METROPOLITAN POSTCARD CLUB OF NEW YORK CITY

THE METROPOLITAN POSTCARD CLUB OF NEW YORK CITY, formerly called the Metropolitan Post Card Collectors Club, is the oldest continuously run postcard club in the United States. Membership is made up of both collectors and dealers of postcards from coast-to-coast and many from foreign countries as well. Not only has the Club been facilitating the exchange of postcards since its founding in 1946, it is dedicated to furthering the understanding and practice of Deltiology -- the collection and study of picture postcards.

We are a cultural institution without borders or brick and mortar. The aggregate collections of our members constitute an invaluable postcard resource and archive on just about any conceivable topic. Our members include serious collectors, dealers, scholars, artists, historians as well as everyday people of all ages who enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the fun of collecting these little paper treasures.

Club Meetings - Usually on the second Sunday of every month, with the exception of the Spring and Autumn show dates, the Metropolitan Postcard Club holds meetings. These are not formal meetings as only a brief amount of business is discussed. They are more in the line of friendly get-togethers where collectors and dealers of any experience can meet to buy and sell postcards. Members of the Club pay no fees to attend, with only a small table fee charged for dealers. Our meetings are also open to the general public for an admission fee of $3.00. At certain times of year the Club hosts special events such as fund raising sales, album competitions, and holiday parties. If you are a novice or are just thinking of becoming a collector, there will be plenty of expert advice for the taking. Please feel free to come and join us.

Postcard Shows - The Metropolitan Postcard Club sponsors a special two day show every November where approximately thirty-five to forty postcard dealers from around the nation and the world attend to introduce their cards to you. The postcards offered range from discount boxes to artist-signed cards and highly-valued rarities. We also co-sponsor a two day show in May with Mary Martin Ltd. Both shows are a great way to find cards. Shopping on the internet is in no way comparable to holding a card in your hand and seeing it with your own eyes. Just by browsing you will gain more familiarity with postcards and become a more knowledgeable collector. And of course, only at shows can you engage in interesting conversation about postcards and collecting. If you've never been to one of our postcard shows or meetings, please plan to attend! You will be pleasantly amazed, and certain to go home with a few treasures.

UPCOMING MEETINGS & SHOWS

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, June 12th.

Special Announcement

At our June 12th Meeting we will be holding a special election of officers to replace the current management team of Rod Kennedy, President, JoAnn Vincent, Show Chair and Pat Klug, Secretary who want to retire after approximately 7 years of service.

We are pleased to announce that a new team of Steve Zalph and Michael Cassara have agreed to run for office to replace them. Steve Zalph as President and Michael Cassara as Vice President. If there are any other candidates who wish to be considered please make your intentions known to our president, Rod Kennedy.

Steve Zalph is a postcard collector and member of the Metropolitan Postcard Club who sells at the Club's monthly meetings and shows.  He has been selling postcards on eBay for about 19 years.  During this past year, he searched for a new home for the Metropolitan Postcard Club's monthly meetings and successfully found the 14th Street Y, where the Club currently meets.

Steve has past leadership experience in the field of international folk dancing, renting different venues where he taught folk dancing in New York City for 23 years.  His various classes (including 15 years teaching at the 92nd Street Y) each drew a weekly attendance of 150-225 people.  Additionally, Steve organized and ran folk dance weekends at various hotels in upstate New York.  He danced in eight folk dance performing groups, ran a mail order record business and co-published Folk Dance Magazine.

Steve's other leadership experiences include serving as co-president and board member of The City Congregation for Humanistic Judaism and serving as a member of several of its committees, where he introduced many ideas on how to improve community programming.

Michael Cassara wears a number of hats in life: he has spent the last 20 years as a leading New York casting director, working on over 600 theatrical productions throughout the world. Originally a performer, he is in demand as an educator, frequently guest-teaching in musical theatre programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. In his "other" life, he works as a professional genealogist, with a focus on Italian and Sicilian genealogical research. He is currently entering his final term as President of the Italian Genealogical Group, Inc. - the nation's largest non-profit dedicated to Italian genealogical research.

Genealogy led Michael to his *third* life - one that brings him great joy: as a dedicated postcard collector and dealer. He is a member of the Metropolitan Postcard Club and has also sold at club meetings and shows. Additionally, he sells on eBay and HipPostcard under "SunnysidePostcards," where he specializes in New York and New Jersey, as well as RPPCs, illustrated comic pre-linen, and whatever else manages to catch his eye in a given moment. As a collector, he holds what is likely the world's largest collection of cards from and related to Paterson, New Jersey (where his maternal ancestors settled), as well as a constantly growing collection of historical New York City cards of all kinds. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Michael lives just over the East River in Sunnyside, Queens.

The election will be held at 12:30pm at the 14th Street Y at 344 East 14th Street.

Starting January 9th, The Metropolitan Postcard Club will be meeting at the 14th Street Y located on the south side of 14th Street near the corner of First Avenue.

The meeting hours will be from 9am to 3pm and the location of the meeting room is on the first floor. Admission for members is free, $5 for nonmembers.

The Y is across the street from the L Train First Avenue stop which connects with most other Subway Lines. It is also convenient to the 14th Street Busway.

The 14th Street Y requires that you be vaccinated and prove it, so please be sure to have proof of vaccination and a photo ID with you.
